Date Fruit Introduction

Iranian Dates are arguably one of the most delicious fruits worldwide. Rarely do we find a foodstuff that is both tasty and good for us – and this is exactly why dates are so popular.


Not only are dates high in a variety of different nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibres which our bodies will thank us for, but they’re also sticky, sweet and delicious. Incorporate them into your diet, and they’ll make a great sweet treat that will also help to regulate digestion, treat anaemia, promote heart health and even help to prevent certain types of cancer in the process. In fact, as little as one date a day is all that’s needed for a healthy balanced diet.


You don’t have to stick to eating dates as they come either - If you’re looking for inspiration and creative ways to incorporate dates into your diet, you’ll be happy to know that they are make a great ingredient in various desserts (cakes and pastries), salads and drinks.


One tried and tested recipe is the Iranian Date Fruit Load Cake. Follow the steps below and try it for yourself – you won’t be disappointed!




  • 180g dates (any variety – with their stones removed and chopped)
  • 200g soft, dark brown sugar
  • 55g butter or margarine
  • 250ml boiling water
  • 220g self-rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract


You will also need:

  • A 23x13cm baking (loaf) tin
  • A large bowl



Preheat your oven to 200ºC / Gas mark 6.

Grease and flour your baking tin.

In a large bowl, combine the dates, brown sugar, margarine and boiling water. Leave to stand for 15 minutes. Stir in the self-rising flour, bicarbonate of soda and vanilla extract. Pour the batter into your tin. Bake in a preheated oven for 45 minutes. Allow to cool before serving – and enjoy!
